Alright, this isn’t going to be a long sappy new year story.. quick and simple. It was a busy year in 2009, between taking a couple vacations, to finding out I am going to be a father, working long hours putting together different computer systems, seeing my unborn children on an ultrasound, flying to Seattle, my grandfather dying and speaking to my father for the first time in 13 years. Much has gone on and it has flown by. I cherish all the moments I have had and look forward to the new ones to come. I am glad to see 2010 arrive while I sit here with some of my closest friends celebrating the new year. I look forward to finally becoming a father and holding my children and all the wonderful things that will bring. 2010 will surely be different than 2009, but I cant wait to get moving on it!

We lost a great man today. A man by the name of Bill, William, Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa. You was a family man, a compassionate man, and a caring man. You were a man of many hobbies, from boating, to reading, building dune buggies and race cars, throw in the love of golfing and a need for adventure. I have always looked up to my grandfather for many things. I remember you helping me pull out one of my baby teeth. I remember writing papers about you in grade school where in 2nd grade I wrote about how you were trying to become famous by sailing across the Saginaw Bay. Or in 4th grade when I wrote about you as my favorite inventor, who holds the patent in the US Patent Office for Power Assisted Rack and Pinion Steering Gear. I remember walking down to the beach in Gulf Shores Alabama and we would stand there and skip stones over really big waves. I remember that you took me to Hooters for the very first time when I was only 11. I remember your golf ball looking muscles when you flexed his arms. I remember you would drive the motor home all day every day when you would take us on vacations to see things we have never seen before. You have left great memories for me to reflect upon. You have made an impact on my life and you will not be forgotten. I will tell stories of you to my children so they too can know what a great man you are. You have made an impact on not only my life but many others…. and your legacy will live on through those people forever.

I have a lot of reasons to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. I am thankful for a loving wife who loves me with all her heart and thinks the world of me. She supports me and believes in everything I can do. I am thankful for my babies, Samantha and Alexis. They might not know it yet but I love them with all my heart and would do anything for them. I am thankful for a great mother who has taught me all of the values which have made me the man I am today. For Ron, my dad, for being there for me, and taking the role of my dad when my other one wasn’t there. I am thankful that he is still alive after his heart surgery this past week, that he was able to hear that I was going to have 2 little girls and to hear how happy he was when he heard the news. I am thankful for my brothers and sisters, who all go out of there way to make sure others are taken care of in a time of need and put others before themselves. I am thankful for my entire family, who come together in times of need, to help others who need help. I am thankful for my friends who are always there for me and fill our moments with unforgettable memories.

When you are thankful of something, that is because someone gave you a reason to be thankful. Which means they were giving you thanks, making you “thank full”….. thus the term Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving many people take their time to reflect on what they are thankful for and it is a compilation of everything everyone has given to them since last Thanksgiving. One day of an entire year is when this happens. It should be more than that. When someone gives you a reason to be thankful, thank them then, and when an opportunity presents itself where you can give them a reason to be thankful for something you have given them, do not hesitate. Do it! It becomes and endless cycle of thanks giving, and the world becomes a better place.

To everyone and everything I am thankful for this Thanksgiving, I hope I have been able to give something back to you to be thankful for. As well, I make a promise to you that I won’t just let you know how much I appreciate you and everything you have done for me on just one day of the year, but when you have given me a reason to thank you, thus continuing the cycle of Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!

Well today we heard their heart beat at the doctors and they read 160 and 170 BPM. Doc says they’re healthy babies. One of them even kicked the microphone. We are so excited. We still can’t believe how lucky we are that this is happening to us. God has given us not only one child but a second one as well.

Now that things have settled down a bit more we have started cleaning up and preparing for the little ones arrival. We started cleaning out the spare bedroom which will soon be the little kids room as well as started to organize and throw away crap which we don’t need. Trying to optimize our processes just a little. So far, being a dad is pretty fun. I get to take care of Jackie and get her everything she wants, which in turn helps out my little ones who don’t even know I exist yet. They will, once they get ears I will be talking with them.. Maybe while Jackie is sleeping.

Yes, that’s right. Today we went to the doctor to have us our first visit and see our new family members. We had a lot of questions and we were both very eager to learn everything their was to know. We made lists, bought things in for the doctor to read. We had spend the last couple weeks reading and researching and we thought we were all ready.. That nothing the doctor was going to tell us was going to surprise us. Boy were we wrong. The said we are going to be the parents of twins. Jackie immediately started crying. My jaw hit the floor. As we watched the monitor we were both in a daze looking at the 2 little things no larger than a small grain or rice, with a beating heart. We couldn’t believe it. Everything we thought and knew and read about having babies changed. We are now having two. Everything doubled. The emotions, the thoughts, the money, the strollers, the cribs and the diapers. Everything.

I was scheduled to go back to work today. I sent them an email stating I would not make it back in today. We stopped off at Taco Bell because Jackie had a craving and we both just needed to calm down.. I know.. not exactly the place you go to make your body calm down, but none the less, it worked. When we walked in we were just chatting and chatting and chatting, we were very emotional. We were all over the board. I had settled a little bit more than Jackie did and I knew she was very nervous. I said I wanted to tell everyone immediately. Everyone we already told we were having one, we then needed to tell everyone we were having two. That was the funniest part.

We used the same routine on everyone, except Rick, he beat me to the punch.. more on that in a minute. We went and called everyone and said we wanted to come over and show them the ultrasound. We showed them the picture of the the baby and explained here it is and here is the heart beat and here’s how big it is aaaand here’s the other one. We started off with Jackie’s mom, then here sister, then my parents, then Rick and Sarah, then Jackie’s other sister, then back to Jackie’s parent to tell her Dad. I had to call Mike again and Aletha the next day because they were both busy that day. But sharing the news was the best thing we could have done. You could really tell it helped settle everything in and made it more real. That night we started referring to them as Number 1 and Number 2. We are now a family of 6 (we have 2 cats.. yes they count!)

I am gonna be a daddy. It is a moment I have been waiting for for many years. A day I have dreamed of. Words cannot explain the feelings I had when Jackie yelled “DAN!!! Get in here NOW!!”. I was overjoyed because I already knew what she was going to say. No more than 5 min earlier we had mentally prepared ourselves for another month of “trying” and we had accepted it. They always say it will happen when you least expect it. It didn’t seem like it was ever going to happen; and then it did.

Unfortunately the celebration was short lived that morning.. we both had to go to work. It was probably my least productive day every. I couldn’t get it out of my mind. Everything I thought I knew and prepared myself for, for this exact moment suddenly made no sense. I started crunching numbers, wondering if we make enough, if we were going to have enough room, what kind of father would I be, what if they get sick, how big are they now, are they gonna play football, basketball, baseball or hockey. Will they live healthy lives. The list went on and on.

As the day went on, Jackie and I shared emails talking about just how wonderful it it. We couldn’t believe we were going to be parents. When I was on my way home, Jackie sent me a text message stating she wanted to tell her family now. So we made the rounds around her family and told them. This was really good for Jackie because she needed someone to talk to about the pregnancy, things I just wouldn’t be able to answer. I started to think how I was going to tell my family.

I always thought I had the perfect idea, but with Aletha moving to Peoria, and I found out my brother was dropping their kids off at my parents house to go out with Sarah, I thought I wouldn’t be able to tell them and I just simply couldn’t wait any longer. Luckily my mom didn’t catch on and said she would just bring the girls with. Well we ate dinner the next weekend and I cooked Baby Back ribs (yes 10 hours over the smoker.. this was a big deal), baby red skin potatoes, baby lettuce, baby cucumbers and baby carrots. We had babies breath on the table and we thought it would be obvious. It wasn’t. I asked them if they picked up on the theme. I listed off all the food and my mom was like “Oh.. yep.. a baby theme”, then Ron says “O.. My …. God!!” and my mom followed with “Oh oh oh!! Congratulations!!”

The next day we stopped by Rick and Sarah’s house and told them, then I called Mike, because he is too busy as a college student now, I called Aletha then Tonya to spread the news. We told everyone we told not to tell anyone because we weren’t ready to tell everyone else, we wanted to wait.. we had only known for 2 weeks. It was still early. With the still chance of a miscarriage, we didn’t want to have to spread the possible “bad” news to everyone as well.

Right now… we are very happy. Couldn’t be happier.

Well today I went out to discover old industrial Detroit with Geoff. This was my first “real” time going to for a photo shoot with my new camera. I had gone out before and snapped a bunch of pictures but I didnt really know what I was doing at the time other then pressing the button. Overall the experience was interesting. Detroit, which at one point was a heavy industrial powerhouse is now in shambles compared to what it once was. Buildings torn down, busted out windows and garbage everywhere. It was almost a depressing time see what Detroit once was to what it is now. Next time we go out we need to hit up some of the newer downtown scenes where things have started to pick up and capture some more “uppy” pictures. Well, I wont leave you waiting, here are the photos.

So today I want to talk to you about metabolism. This has come up several times now and today I just went over the edge. I am sick and tired of people who can’t control their weight saying to me “I wish I had metabolism like you”. If I have such a great metabolism, why do I have to spend several hours in the gym EVERY WEEK just to get myself BACK DOWN to a healthy weight. How did I end up needing to be in TWO biggest loser competitions at work within ONE YEAR just to get down to where I am today(and have enough fat on me to win both of them too). Why is it that I eat crappy cheese that DOESN’T MELT because it is better for me. Or why do I have to go WAY OUT OF MY WAY to buy healthy food if my metabolism is so freaking awesome. If my metabolism is so great, why do I need to do SO MANY THINGS in order to maintain a healthy weight. Its like a gosh darn full time job.

So, I want to take this time to re-phrase the comment. Next time say “I wish I had YOUR DETERMINATION because I just can’t seem to MOTIVATE MYSELF to get healthy the way YOU HAVE THE ABILITY TO DO”

When I became a fat blob of a person I decided I was going to do something about it, and I did it. I am proud of my accomplishment and I hate that people try to discredit my accomplishments because they think I have found the secret fountain of magical metabolism.

A healthy lifestyle is hard work and it’s apparent you haven’t been working very hard.

F@CK!!!
